Pitfalls of Web Accessibility Evaluation Tools

Automated web accessibility evaluation tools are hard to trust, understand and typically provide feedback on a small amount of factors that influence accessibility. Also, a unified web evaluation methodology should be adopted to provide consistent results across tools. In this article I let the tools test each other.

SharePoint 2010 Accessibility Event

The roundtable discussion at the end of HiSoftware's event. The "UK Accessibility Roundtable for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010", a HiSoftware event at Microsoft's offices in London Victoria. The day revolved around several demos of SharePoint 2010 and Compliance Sheriff, and was fleshed it out with some quite good accessibility information. These are my notes on the event, with a lot of interspersed commentary.

Addendum: Podcast Corrections

  • Steve Grobschmidt's last name was announced incorrectly (it's not "Aquinas", that's part of his Twitter handle).
  • We state that there are 8 guest speakers; there's actually 9!
  • We mentioned that Boagworld is no longer podcasting, but failed to mention that they plan on returning in January 2011. (Paul mentions this in his commentary.)

Refreshable Braille

When guest author Roger Hudson presents accessibility seminars or workshops, he usually asks those attending to indicate if they have seen a screen reader being used. Several years ago, it was not uncommon for only about 10 percent of the audience to indicate that they had. Recently, often more than three quarters of the people attending say they have seen a screen reader in use. However, nearly all assume a screen reader is an audio output device and when asked if they have seen a Braille device, the answer is usually no. So Roger and Braille user, Bruce Maguire, decided to create a video demonstrating a refreshable Braille device in use. They hope that this will provide viewers with both a basic understanding of how the device is operated and a feeling for what it might be like to access the web without relying on the senses of sight and hearing.

Disability Rights California pushes Department of Public Health to Protect Nursing Home Residents

DRC submitted comments to the Department of Public Health, Licensing & Certification Division, in response to Senate Bill 852, requiring the Department to solicit feedback from stakeholders regarding a recent Bureau of State Audits (BSA) report. Read the BSA Fact Sheet Summary, BSA Summary, and BSA Full Report.

Among other things, the BSA report exposed serious problems with the Department of Public Health?s failure to collect millions in fines and for allowing appeals to be dragged out by the nursing home industry, sometimes for years.

DRC?s investigations into nursing home abuse and neglect mirror the BSA report?s findings.  The Department of Public Health takes years to issue citations, even in extreme instances of neglect such as a resident choking to death after the nursing facility failed to initiate CPR or other life saving techniques; and a resident dying after cracking her head from a fall from a bed sling weakened by repeated washings in bleach.

DRC urges the Department of Public Health to adopt the BSA?s reform recommendations, and put in place additional measures to ensure that nursing home residents are protected.

Nine Accessible Steps To Search Engine Optimisation

There are many design considerations when creating or re-designing a Web site.
  • Corporate branding.
  • Providing quality content for your visitors.
  • Ensuring that the site is accessible via a range of different devices to users with varying needs.
However, all of this is going to be pretty pointless unless people have a reasonable chance of finding your site via Google or another search engine. Enter the art of Search Engine Optimisation or "SEO" for short.
